Three students at Kentucky State University were awarded annual vocal scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year, according to a May 8 announcement. The scholarships were made possible by Dr. Vernell Bennett, a former music faculty member and administrator at the university.
The scholarships aim to support talented students who demonstrate dedication and preparation in their musical pursuits. Recipients Essence Kimbrough, Aalaysha Robinson, and Marcus Wilkerson were chosen after submitting two audition videos each for review. Their involvement in ensembles such as Concert Choir, Gospel Choir, and Opera/Music Theater Workshop was also recognized.
Kimbrough is pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work, Robinson is an undergraduate music major, and Wilkerson is a graduate student in environmental studies. The selection process was conducted with input from Dr. Bryan Bolzenthal, assistant professor of voice at Kentucky State University, and Professor Mario Radford, director of Kentucky State Choirs.
Dr. Bennett previously served on the university’s music faculty for eleven years before taking on the role of vice president for student affairs. She now holds the position of provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
“The Kentucky State Music Department is deeply grateful for Dr. Bennett’s generosity and continued commitment to our students,” Dr. Bolzenthal said. “These scholarships help support the next generation of singers while continuing a proud legacy of excellent music-making at Kentucky State.”
