Student interest in Kentucky State University is increasing as the institution joins Common App, a widely used college application platform. This move allows prospective students to create a single profile and submit applications to multiple colleges, including Kentucky State, simplifying the process.
Before the university’s application went live on Common App, over 1,000 prospective students had already identified Kentucky State as a school of interest. Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo, president of Kentucky State University, said, “Joining Common App is an important step forward, because it expands access and makes it easier for prospective students to find us and apply. This affiliation comes at an important moment for our institution. We are seeing sustained enrollment growth and strong interest from prospective students, and we are committed to building on that progress through a high-quality, student-centered educational experience that prepares graduates to lead and serve.”
Common App is designed to streamline the college application process for all students but can be especially helpful for first-generation applicants and those eligible for Pell Grants by consolidating key steps into one platform.
Kentucky State University has reported significant enrollment gains. The university enrolled 2,838 students at the Fall 2025 census, which is among its highest headcounts in ten years. This figure marks a 34 percent increase from Fall 2024 and more than 70 percent over Fall 2023. In January, Kentucky State welcomed 74 new first-year students and 110 transfer students for Spring 2026. Full-time equivalent enrollment rose from 1,499 in the previous academic year to 1,619 in 2025-2026.
Students planning to start college in Fall 2026 are encouraged to apply now through Common App (https://www.commonapp.org/explore/kentucky-state-university). The transfer application process will begin in March. Through Common App’s Direct Admissions program, some applicants may receive admission offers if their qualifications match the university’s expectations.
Kentucky State offers both academic and need-based scholarships. Additionally, bachelor’s degree candidates in fields such as food or agriculture can consider applying for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program. This program covers full tuition and other expenses and includes a summer internship that may lead to employment after graduation.
Founded in 1886 as a public Historically Black land-grant institution located in Frankfort, Kentucky State University offers more than sixty degree programs across various disciplines including business, nursing, psychology, agriculture, computer science, criminal justice, biology, public health, aquaculture science, public policy, sports analytics and engineering.
