The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has issued a warning to residents about fraudulent text messages that impersonate state agencies. These messages contain a suspicious link resembling Kentucky government website addresses and falsely claim that recipients have unpaid traffic tickets. The texts threaten that a “DMV violation” will be reported and “driving privileges” suspended if payment is not made immediately.
Recipients are advised not to click on the link, even if it appears to belong to a government agency, as the message is part of a scam. KYTC clarified that it does not collect traffic ticket fees or notify customers of violations. The cabinet is taking steps to have the fraudulent websites removed.
Those who have provided personal information are urged to contact their bank without delay. Reports can also be made to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Additionally, individuals can visit the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General website at ag.ky.gov for guidance on potential identity theft.
Suspicious messages can be forwarded to 7726 (SPAM) to notify mobile providers.
